I read over a couple of my recent posts the other night and MAN HOWDY AM I A WHINER OR WHAT?
I fear I’ve been giving you the wrong impression.
I haven’t been having as dead a summer as you may think. In reality, I guess I’ve done a lot of stuff. I’ve been to the cottage and the beach a few times. I’ve been to dinner parties and birthday parties and barbeques and a whole bunch of Patio Thursdays. It’s just been really different from what I expected, probably because I expected it to be busy in the way it’d been when I’d come for a weekend visit (every minute booked, phone ringing off the hook). That was a silly of me.
And it’s really not so bad.
So. Here’s a post about sunshine, lollypops, rainbows and everything that’s wonderful.
First: comments. My posts of late may have given you the impression that I have no friends, which is, of course, not true. Lots of them live far away, sure, but they’ve still been coming out in droves (some, as a result of reading the blah-og) to tell me jokes, set me straight, and send me cheering messages. My friend Diana – a Psychiatrist living in Calgary – sent the most serious letter, but in some ways it was the sweetest, in which she told me she was worried about me and also helpfully listed the signs of clinical depression. (Things to watch for!) In some ways, this is a joke, because she knows I know plenty about clinical depression, at least from the outside, but in others she’s being serious because she’s a doctor and sometimes they can’t help it. It was a good letter. It made me happy.
Oddly, D’s two brothers also voiced comments to my last post via facebook. D’s eldest brother said a few things including my favourite line, which was “You’re cool and everybody likes you” (awwwww). His other brother followed that up with the following:
“Yeah. I always enjoyed how you're very keen in conversation. I always leave feeling good, like 'Jen clearly enjoyed talking to me. And hearing what I have to say.' It always left me in a positive place, personally.”
This is all very kind. (Completely embarrassing too, because it just underscores the fact that people are indeed reading this spew.) But kind. So thanks, guys.
Other people weighed in too, but I won’t go on and on about it. Some of it was really funny, though. You’re definitely missing out.
