This page is under construction, but...

Here's the deal: I have hundreds of old PDFs of my published work hanging around my computer, and hundreds more in printed form hanging around my apartment. The idea of uploading them all is daunting. Hence, this whole thing about the page being "under construction." I'll get to it eventually. I want to say "I promise," but let's face it... I might be awhile.

That said, it wouldn't be right to leave you with nothing, would it? With that in mind, here is a very small sampling of pieces from my portfolio that were either popular, or easily available online. (Three cheers for the Interweb!)

He Loves the Nightlife: A Gossip's Guide

Resident celebrity snoop Shinan Govani shows off T.O.'s hippest hot spots
Oct 2009, PostCity.com
National Post gossip columnist Shinan Govani may well be the hippest guy in the city, but don’t call him a hipster. “I’ve been called worse, I guess,” he says, “but there’s a stigma associated with it. Hipster has become a dirty word. There’s a sheep connotation with it. But that’s part of living in society, I guess. Being part of a herd.” Govani certainly makes it his business to know where the herds congregate. “By the very nature of my job, I’m going out every night of the week to parties and events,” he says. read more...

Hidden in Plain Sight: Baldwin St.
with Jessi Cruickshank

MTV’s hottest host discovers the secret charms of the little street that could
Sept 2009, PostCity.com
In the heart of the U of T student district, just east of Chinatown and south of the imposing concrete turkey (or is it a peacock?) that is Robarts Library, lies Baldwin Village. It’s easy to miss. Indeed, even calling it a village seems, at first, to go beyond exaggeration. Taking up little more than a block, the bit of Baldwin that isn’t residential is tiny. Nonetheless, this neighbourhood is home to an abundant array of restaurants and cafés, favoured by students and often flooded with visitors from the nearby AGO. read more...

Getting Down witk K-Town

Etalk’s Tanya Kim gives me the exclusive scoop on Little Korea
Aug 2009, PostCity.com
Just west of the heart of the Annex lies a little strip of Bloor Street known sometimes as Koreatown, sometimes as the Korean Business Area (or K.B.A.) and sometimes as Ktown, but to most, it’s simply called Little Korea. The same young urbanites who shop the bohemian blocks to the east frequent K-town’s restaurants and businesses on the hunt for perpetually hip and authentically Asian offerings, from buckwheat noodles to animae-emblazoned fashions, and much of the Annex seems to run together. But make no mistake, K-town is unique. read more...

The Gin is Cold and The Piano's Hot:
A Jazz Guide

Radio host Ralph Benmergui on the best places to hear the sounds of the city
Nov 2009, PostCity.com
Ralph Benmergui says he isn’t really a jazz expert. Surprising, considering he’s the host of Benmergui in the Morning on JAZZ.FM91, Canada’s only notfor- profit radio station dedicated to jazz music. “I’m a broadcaster,” he says, modestly. “Most people know more about jazz than I do.” We’re in the Home Smith Bar at the Old Mill (21 Old Mill Rd.). Benmergui has agreed to give us a mini-tour of some of the best places to hear live jazz in the city, and the Old Mill is our first stop. read more...

Why We Love the Geeks

Technology made them powerful. Wired made them fashionable.
14 Feb 2006, TheTyee.ca
I have a confession to make: I love geeks. I always have. Show me a burly man in a letter jacket and I'll deke around him on my way to the water boy. Show me a square-jawed Superman and I'll long for Clark. My first serious boyfriend had hundreds of action figures and a full sized cardboard cutout of Chewbacca in his bedroom. I loved him like crazy. And suddenly, I'm not the only one. Geek worship is now more than accepted. It's super hot. read more...

Holding Out on Shacking Up

Marriage is up, cohabitating isn't. Am I playing it wrong?
16 Nov 2006, TheTyee.ca
You know that saying, "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" Well apparently, I'm a cow. When I first moved in with my boyfriend (over two years ago) we talked about marriage all the time. Ever since shacking up, however, wedding plans have taken a back seat. I think they're in the trunk somewhere. Under the spare tire.read more...

Jonsin' for a Ride

Cruiser culture is about 'little kid fun'.
8 Mar 2006, TheTyee.ca
"I love my bike. I love it. It's just so pretty," says Vancouverite Emily McWalter. She's got a baby blue number with a white banana seat and she's added a wicker basket and hundreds of silk flowers. McWalter is one of the many "cruisers" who's customized her bike. Donovan Matthews knows plenty more. read more...

You never forget (dinosaur)

Getting ripped off.
Nov 2006, ION Magazine
I hate it when people copy me. I accept there is some aspect of mimicry in almost everything we do these days, but every now and again, most of us get the feeling that someone is ripping us off. That’s the current plight of a Vancouver area graffiti artist whose work may have been snaked by several online shops and sellers. read more in the original pdf...
